Background

When Black Country, New Road went live for their album Forever Howlong, it looked like a simple Q&A: the band answering fan questions about the record. Behind it was a planned direct-to-fan drop. The band teamed up with Big Cookie, their direct-to-fan partner, and kept the whole moment on their own Shopify store, with Single running the stream.

Strategy

The team treated the Q&A as a release and the stream page as the store. Three moves shaped the drop:

  • Make the formats exclusive to the stream: The band's limited CDs and cassettes were available only on their own store and went on sale during the stream, and Single reported every sale to the charts.
  • Sell next to the conversation: Single's video player let fans watch, chat and buy from one page, so nobody clicked away mid-Q&A.
  • Build the audience before the day: Big Cookie ran social posts, email invites and RSVP forms that doubled as list growth. On launch day, reminder emails and social posts sent fans straight to the stream.

Results

  • Thousands of fans registered in the 24 hours before the event.
  • Over 3K tuned in.
  • 25% viewer conversion rate during the activation.
  • Every limited format sold out in under 20 minutes.

Single's tech and feature set allows us to get creative with our partners and provide not only an authentic connection for Black Country, New Road with their fans but also drive considerable ROI on their own store.

Why It Works

Most drops split a fan's attention: the content lives on one site and the store on another. Here the Q&A was the reason to be there and the limited run was the reason to buy now, all on the band's own store. The RSVP forms turned the pre-event hype into a list the band owns. Running the stream with Single kept the sale, the audience and the customer data in one place.
